Saga of the Stapler
K Col
9 March 2020
Although work on the K Col track upgrade finished, a shortage of posts meant that 20 metres missed out on planking. Posts have since been dropped in by helicopter and the main objective on this day was to do that gap.
Another task was to continue adding wire to make the planks safer to walk on. However, we had a saga with the stapler. Just finished one plank length when it stopped. Looked and saw a broken bit of staple stuck in a groove. Couldn’t budge it with pliers, so took apart but we had to take off several bits including the staple barrel. Greg eventually got the broken staple out and then came the tasks of putting things back together. We noticed a small pin, but we might have not replaced it properly.
It worked again and another 6m length done when suddenly no staples came out. The firing plate was no longer visible. Took the plastic cover off thinking the spring may have come off, but it was the pin which was nowhere to be seen. Greg K could hear it but couldn’t get it to fall out. It looks like the side will need opening to find it. We unanimously thought we should defer to technical skill of Greg B and hand it over him to fix.
