Easier for Walking
Sunday 24 November 2019
Quite often there is a cold wind blowing over Lake Fenton and today wasn’t an exception. Trouble was our work commenced there, with manoeuvring large rocks that visitors had to negotiate and carting gravel to repair the damaged track. Nevertheless, the effort soon warmed most of us up.
This marked the start of our project to improve the track at the popular Fagus site at Lake Fenton and funded from a grant by the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. This enabled the Friends of Mount Field to contract experienced track maker John Hughes. This included his power barrow and winching equipment with the latter enabling large rocks to be moved that we would never have been able to do unaided.
With plenty of volunteers we managed to get the start of the track done and most of the large rocks into place. Some opted to do trimming of the track, particularly on a dense Bauera section. The work will be continued over several days during December.
