Windy Moor and Beyond
Saturday 20 March 2021
Mount Field East Track
Two distinctly different tasks were on the agenda for the day, repairing planking and track trimming.
Fortunately, two volunteers well versed in maintaining timber track work were able to come along with a drill and the necessary materials. The first section of planking was newly installed in 2020, but one end had sprung up following the drying summer weather and required two new posts to be added to secure it to the ground. The next area was on the planking over Windy Moor where the ends of several planks had lifted and required additional longer screws or in some cases had to be bolted down.
While this was going on the rest of us walked to the far eastern edge of Windy Moor and cut back encroaching scrub just beyond the moor on the way towards Lake Rayner. The FOMF had never worked on this section of track before, so it was at least 20 years since any trimming had been done. From lunchtime onwards all the volunteers were available to do the work and we managed to get the full 120 metres cut.
