Visitor Zone

 Saturday 15 July 2023

With showers and wind forecast after wet weather the day before, we decided not to search the wet forest on the steep slopes opposite the visitor centre for holly.

Instead, we spent the morning working on blackberries beside the Tyenna River. Pleasingly, there were not too many blackberries coming back in the patch we weeded last year (see this blog post). We finished the regrowth in that patch, then moved on to more blackberries upstream, although high water levels prevented us from weeding some of them.

After lunch, we checked the area on the left of the entrance road into the park. Again, the areas where we worked last year (see this blog post) were fairly free of weeds. However, there were lots of blackberries and Spanish heath near the railway line, which we had not reached last year. We tackled them with gusto, taking a break only during a short, sharp shower, when we sheltered under the verandah at the railway station.

Bracken is hiding a lot of Blackberry bushes in a patch we worked on
