The track is mostly in reasonable condition, but the section from near Lake Webster back towards Lake Dobson was surprisingly starting to overgrow and needed trimming. It was decided to take the hedge trimmers as a stretch would be good for part of the work. The section was last worked on in March 2013 which is the only occasion the FOMF have worked there, and it was probably a lot longer ago than that when it was previously cut.
It was a wet morning in Hobart with much rain overnight. However, the forecast for Mount Field was still good. It was still showery at Granton, but after only a few kilometres along the road to New Norfolk, the road was dry conditions got better the further west we went. Our plans went awry when Greg’s car broke down at New Norfolk, but after discussion, Stephen was ferried back to Granton so that his vehicle could substitute. Greg in meantime managed to start his vehicle, but it was decided to leave it at New Norfolk.
About 45 minutes was lost, but as there was plenty of daylight at this time of year, we still walked to the originally planned site on the Lake Webster Track. It was not easy work carrying the hedge trimmers and all the associated gear. Taking both trimmers paid off as it allowed an impressive 380 metres of thick vegetation to be cut, which was almost all of the thick overgrowth there. About 200 metres of track not so overgrown was done by hand loppers.
It was quite warm during the trudge back uphill to the cars, and way too late for a coffee. When Greg got in his car back at New Norfolk, it did start much to everyone’s relief.
