Weed Removal at Park Entrance
Saturday 18 June 2011
With snow well entrenched in the alpine area, the focus was on some weed work near the park entrance. Blackberry and a bit of Briar was tackled in the strip west of the entrance road. Large Broom bushes were cut down on the western side just north of the residence on PWS land beside the old stock yard fence.
On the south western side of the entrance bridge Broom was cut down plus a Willow removed beside the bridge.
The area immediately to the north eastern side of the park entrance sign near the bridge was totally full of weed species (right hand side as you enter).
Currently only the thick Broom bushes have been removed, but the plan is to clear the area up to the boundary with the adjoining property and then plant with natives. It was thought that Melaleucas, Leptospermum and perhaps a Blackwood or two would be suitable (Melaleuca squarossa, Leptospermum lanigereum and Acacia melanoxylon).
This would make the entrance much nicer and more fitting and in any case some thick plantings will be needed to stop the Broom reinvading from the neighbouring property.
Before and after Photos at park entrance
The cut weeds were left on either side of the entrance; the right hand side being behind the park sign wall. Others are just north of the parks house and stock yard. Other cuttings are on the old rail line. All cut weeds had the herbicide glyphosate applied to any trunks remaining in the ground.
